چکیده

BACKGROUND Pulp necrosis is one of the main complications of dental trauma. When it happens on an immature tooth, pulp necrosis implies a lack of root maturation and apical closure. A therapy called apexification is required to induce the formation of a calcified apical barrier allowing a permanent and hermetic root filling. The aim of this prospective randomized clinical trial is to compare Mineral Trioxide Aggregate(MTA)with Calcium Hydroxide(CH)as materials used to induce root-end closure in necrotic permanent immature incisors. METHODS/DESIGN This study, promoted by AP-HP, was approved by the ethics committee(CPP Paris Ile de France IV). 34 children aged from 6 to 18 years and presenting a non-vital permanent incisor are selected. Prior to treatment, an appropriate written consent has to be obtained from both parents and from children. Patients are then randomly assigned to either the MTA(experimental)or CH(control)groups. Recalls are performed after 3, 6 and 12 months to determine the presence or absence of a calcified apical barrier through the use of clinical and radiographic exams. Additional criteria such as clinical symptoms, apical radiolucencies, periapical index(PAI)are also noted. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov no. NCT00472173 (First inclusion: May 10, 2007; Last inclusion: April 23, 2009; study completed: April 15, 2010).

Apexification in Non-Vital Teeth with Immature Roots: Report of Two Cases

Apexification is a method of inducing apical closure for non-vital immature permanent teeth. During this treatment a mineralized barrier is induced [with long term calcium hydroxide (CH) treatment]; or artificially created [with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) plug]. This article describes two cases of apexification in immature necrotic teeth treated with these two different techniques. After ...

Mineral Trioxide Aggregate as an Apical Plug in Endodontic Management of Non-Vital Permanent Teeth with Open Apex: A Case Report

Apexification is a widely used technique to manage immature permanent teeth and can be performed either using calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) or mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). This paper illustrates a case report of a unsuccessful apexification with Ca (OH)2 of amaxillary incisor that was then treated by an apical barrier made of MTA.

Root canal revascularization. The beginning of a new era in endodontics.

Endodontic management of immature anterior teeth with necrotic pulps is a great challenge. Although there are different treatment procedures to deal with this problem such as apexification by using calcium hydroxide dressings or applying a barrier of mineral trioxide aggregate and gutta-percha obturation, the outcomes are still unsatisfactory and the root might still be weak. Recently, a new tr...

Comparison of apexification with mineral trioxide aggregate and calcium hydroxide.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to compare mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] clinically and radiographically as materials used to induce root-end closure in necrotic permanent teeth with immature apices (apexification). METHODS Fifteen children, each with at least 2 necrotic permanent teeth requiring root-end closure (apexification), were selected for this st...

Apexification: a review.

This paper reviews the rationale and techniques for treatment of the non-vital immature tooth. The importance of careful case assessment and accurate pulpal diagnosis in the treatment of immature teeth with pulpal injury cannot be overemphasized. The treatment of choice for necrotic teeth is apexification, which is induction of apical closure to produce more favorable conditions for conventiona...
